A private house at the head of the pass, reached by eleven kilometres of switchback that we drive for you. Cars are met at the valley station, dinner is laid at eight and the casino in the east wing opens at nine.

The Switchback Transfer
Cars are met at the valley station. The last eleven kilometres are ours to drive, in a heated car with your name on the manifest.

Four thousand labels rest under the kitchen. One oak table seats twenty-two, and the sommelier decides the order of the evening.

The House
Built into the last switchback
The road runs out of mountain to climb, and the house is what stands there. Nine floors step back as they rise, so every terrace clears the one below it and the valley stays inside the frame from first coffee to last light. Stone quarried on the pass, oak from the valley floor, glass wherever the wind allows it. The cellar, the library and the casino share the east end of the ground floor.

Every window keeps the valley in view
Rooms are turned toward the road you came up by, so the drive is still there in the morning — nine bends of it, thinning into cloud. Walnut, brushed brass, wool woven two valleys west, and heated stone underfoot from the door to the terrace rail.

The Casino
The east wing after nine
The casino doors open once the dining room begins to empty. Twenty-four tables under low brass lamps, croupiers who have worked this floor for a decade, and a quiet that surprises first-time guests. The casino belongs to the same evening as the cellar and the terrace — one more room on the way through the house, not a reason to come up the mountain.

The Baths
Warm water at the end of the climb
Two floors are cut into the rock behind the house, and the same wells that heat the building fill the pools. Most guests come down within an hour of arriving, still carrying the cold of the pass, and a few come back long after the casino has closed for the night.
